Sun, Sea and Squid?

Recently I travelled to one of the Canary Islands to visit some friends, relax, take a break, dip my feet in the sea and try new things. I can happily say I ticked everything off my list.

Deciding to take a trip alone initially filled me with fear; I am not a massive fan of flying and have never done the whole airport to aeroplane process by myself before! The knowledge that I would be landing in a much warmer climate made the fear shrink and as I was sat on the plane waiting to take off I must admit some of that fear did turn into excitement and after a few hours in the air, dare I say it, I began to enjoy myself!
I touched down on Spanish ground in the late afternoon so after a quick drive across the island to see some sights, my friends and I stopped at a local tapas bar for some dinner. Unable to read anything on the menu I tried a little bit of everything (including baby fried squid, and it was surprisingly good.)

I had no plans for the week, but managed to fit loads in. We visited a monkey park where I got to walk in with monkeys, birds, tortoise and lemurs. The weather was beautiful and the animals were all so adorable, even the crocodiles who were bathing in the sun.

I went down town to do a bit of shopping and check out some more sights, drink amazing coffee and take lots of pictures. I rode the Spanish tram complete unaware of where I was going! I ate unreal food both home cooked and in restaurants, one of the best things was a home cooked Spanish meal that my friend made. The closest thing I could compare it to in England is a casserole but full of amazing flavours and textures.

And you can’t go to an island and not go to the beach. I went to the main beach and climbed over rocks, dipped my feet in the sea and lay in the sun. Unfortunately, unlike the Spanish locals, I turned less of a golden brown and more of a glowing red!

Before I knew it, it was time to say goodbye. I brought home with me some amazing memories, stronger friendships, a pocket full of recipes and a tolerance of flying!

Below are a selection of my photos, I will be uploading a few more in depth posts about some of the days shortly.
