So, it felt like forever, but it’s that time again –
football season is back.
And following a pre-season fitness week in Portugal all the
Luton boys looked to be on top form in my first game this season.
Hitchin is always a game I look forward to, the ground is a ‘proper’
old-school football ground and it’s always a good opportunity to watch the team
playing with new signings, trialists (and commonly at Luton) under new
management.
Although not a wholly convincing performance the score
backed up the moments of football shown from the Luton team.
Goals from Shaw, Whalley, Martin and Smith secured the
Hatters a 4-0 win over their local opponents.
It was a rather slow start to the game but the boys fitness
levels really showed as Hitchin began to lag and Luton got all four of their
goals in the last 16 minutes of the game.
I think the highlight for me was seeing the ball hit the
back of the net from the penalty spot, as a Luton fan a penalty is sometimes
more nerving than anything, what should be a good chance to score has
previously been anything but!
There is a big gap in levels between the two sides, and it
is the first game I have seen but I do have to admit I was impressed with a lot
of what I saw and hope that we can continue to build on our strengths and work
our way back up to where we belong.
