Words Are Not Just For Nerds

Among other things I am known for being a slow reader, however, reading is something I simply love to do.
Which is why I am embarrassed to be telling you that I have not read half as much as I could have (or should have) this year, something I had not realised until recently when browsing my local bookshop.

I was greeted by an author who was promoting her books and when she asked me the last book I read and loved I couldn’t answer half as quickly as I would have liked.

My most recent reads have been the Private series by James Patterson but quite frankly I was grabbed in by the first book and sort of let go with the sequels that I couldn’t say they were books I really loved, more books I had read!

So I decided to give this author (Bobbie Darbyshire) and her book (Love, revenge & buttered scones) a try. I instantly judge a book by its font and this book happily drew me in so I began reading. As a slow reader I was surprised at how quickly I got into the book (don’t get me wrong it probably took me three times as long but the fact I had given the book that time said something!)

Witty and well written, it was easy for me to see the story as I read it and it brought back to me all the things I love about reading.

From this rekindled love for books I also borrowed After Tomorrow from the library, a teen book written by Gillian Cross. This is more of a survival/action book but again I got lost in the book and couldn’t stop turning the pages.

I also read The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas (why had I not read this before the age of 24?!) I loved it, such a well written and brilliantly constructed piece of writing. I even found myself crying as I turned the final chapter, yes real tears rolling down my cheeks. I watched the film shortly after but as with many film adaptations of books I was immensely let down.

I am now deep within The Fault In Our Stars by John Green and am loving every page as I turn it. I am so glad I said yes to Bobbie in the shop that day as I really believe it was her book that brought me back from that sad place you go when you cannot fall in love with the book you are reading.

If I can offer you one piece of advice it is this…pick up a book. Any book, don’t worry about the cover or the content or how people will look at you on the train. If you enjoy it, read it because there really is no better feeling.
