Hatters on the day captain Steve McNulty was sent off and Shaun Whalley missed a penalty against his former club in a game Luton just couldn't win.
Southport's keeper not only saved the spot kick he then managed to stop the rebound and a third attempt was cleared just in front of the line.
Missed chances from last season’s top scorer Andre Gray were as close to goal as Luton saw.
Following an impressive and exciting pre-season, including a 7-0 against Arsenal XI, Town boss John Still had joked his team would 'probably get beaten' at Southport.
Not knowing how right he would be, his team were almost unmentioned in the first 45 minutes. This may be due to last minute changes in the team as both Jon Shaw and Ronnie Henry picked up injuries and were unnamed in the side.
As disappointing as it was it is only one game and there are plenty more to go.
Hopefully with thousands behind them, and on home ground on Tuesday, Luton can pull a much needed 3 points out of the bag.
As always make sure you check back to see how they do.
Next game: Tuesday 13th August
