ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE

If you have seen any news or social media site recently you will have heard of the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’. I was challenged, however, before I took the challenge I wanted to know a bit more about why people were pouring ice water over themselves.

ALS is a disease that causes muscle weakness, paralysis and respiratory failure. Most people live 2-5 years after their first signs of the disease but only 10% of people with ALS will survive 10 years.

The ice bucket challenge is being done not only to raise money but also awareness. Being covered in ice water makes your body feel numb, this is one of the side effects of the disease as ALS sufferers muscles weaken and, eventually, become paralysed.

An ALS sufferer recorded a video of his ice bucket challenge as well as detailing his story of how the disease has affected him and his family. Watch his video here.

I nominate all of you still reading this, but specifically I nominated Troy, LaRosa and Lisa. Any of you doing the challenge remember to use the #kissmyals.

Whether you are taking part in the challenge or not please donate whatever you can. Every £ or $ makes a difference.
